Actos Lawsuit hearing set for March 22, 2012

  • Home

Actos is a prescription drug approved to treat type 2 diabetes. Recent lawsuits claim that consumers who took Actos developed bladder cancer from taking the drug. The maker of Actos is Takeda Pharmaceutical Company. Takeda is Asia’s biggest drugmaker and is the defendant in the lawsuits. Eli Lilly & Co., based in Indianapolis, is a co-defendant. The lawsuits claim that Takeda failed to provide adequate warnings to the consumers of Actos about the risk of developing bladder cancer.

Takeda pulled Actos, its top-selling drug, off the market in Germany and France last year after it was linked to an increased cancer risk. The drug is still on the market in the United States. But, in August 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated drug labels for Actos. The new label means that medicines containing pioglitazone (Actos) will include safety information that the use of pioglitazone for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer.

U.S. federal lawsuits against Takeda have been consolidated before U.S. District Judge Rebecca Doherty in Lafayette, Louisiana, in December 2011. The court filings show the first hearing on the cases for March 22, 2012. Judge Doherty overseeing lawsuits has appointed 19 plaintiffs’ lawyers to manage litigation involving U.S. federal claims. Takeda may face as many as 10,000 claims that Actos causes bladder cancer.

If you took Actos and experienced side effects like bladder cancer we urge you to contact Longo Legal, PLLC today. Call toll free at (855)-566-4648.
