Asthma Medication and Birth Defects

  • Home

Research is not clear on rare birth defects related to women who took asthma medication during pregnancy. The study from the Center for Environmental Health, New York State Department of Health, showed that treating asthma during pregnancy most likely does not increase your baby’s risk for most major birth defects.

Some rare birth defects did show a slight increase according to the study. Women who took asthma medication during the month before they conceived through the third month of their pregnancy were more likely to have children born with certain defects. These less common birth defects may include: esophageal atresia (where the development of the esophagus is incomplete), anorectal atresia (where the anus opening is missing or blocked), or omphalocele (where the intestines or other organs are sticking out of the belly button).

The study authors stated that use of asthma medication around the time of conception and during the first trimester increased risk only slightly. Further, it is difficult to tell whether it was asthma treatment or the asthma itself that could cause the increase in the birth defects.

In any event we will blog any new information as it is announced.
