Cipro, Levaquin, and Other Fluoroquinolones May Cause Retinal Detachment

  • Home

Levaquin (fluoroquinolone) has been linked to an increased risk of retinal detachment according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. Patients treated by ophthalmologists for retinal detachment were five times more likely to have been taking these popular antibiotic drugs, according to the study.

Connective tissue detachment has been a known side effect of Levaquin since at least 2008. In July of 2008 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a black box warning for tendon ruptures for fluoroquinolones. According to Reuters, the researchers conducted this new study because they were concerned that the same side effects of Levaquin and Cipro that impact tendon cartilage and connective tissue could also impact the eye connective tissue.

The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue that lines the inside of the eye that sends messages through the optic nerve.  If the retina detaches, it is pulled from its normal position. Retinal detachment starts as the appearance of lines, dots, or “floaters” across the eye. There could also be blurred vision, shadows, or partial blindness in the eye. Retinal detachment can cause permanent blindness if it is not surgically treated within a few days.

Fluoroquinolones are sold in two categories. Ciprofloxacin is sold under the names Zoxan, Proquin, or Cipro. Levofloxacin is sold under the names Levaquin or Cravit.

Longo Legal, PLLC is investigating potential lawsuits for individuals who have taken Cipro or Levaquin and experienced retinal detachment.  If you took any Fluoroquinolone and developed a side effect including retinal detachment or tissue injury, call Longo Legal, PLLC toll free at 855-566-4648. We may be able to help.
