FDA Limits Usage of Nizoral Due to Liver Injury, Drug Interactions, and Adrenal Gland Problems

FDA Nizoral Safety Communication

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a Drug Safety Communication describing new actions they are taking related to Nizoral oral tablets.  The agency warns that the drug can cause severe liver injuries and adrenal gland problems and plans to limit the drug’s use.

The FDA has approved label changes and added a new Medication Guide to address these safety issues.

Nizoral and Liver Injury

Liver injury caused by Nizoral tablets may potentially result in liver transplantation or death.  The FDA recommended that patients with liver disease not use the medication.

Liver damage has been seen in both patients that received high doses of Nizoral for short periods of time and patients that recieved low doses for long periods of time.

Nizoral and Adrenal Insufficiency

In addition to liver injury, Nizoral tabets have also been linked to adrenal insufficiency.  According to the FDA, the drug may decrease the body’s production of hormones called corticosteroids, which affects the body’s balance of water and salts and minerals.  The agency communicated that health care professionals should monitor adrenal function in patients taking Nizoral tablets who have existing adrenal problems or in patients who are under prolonged periods of stress.

Nizoral Drug Interactions

According to the FDA, Nizoral oral tablets can have harmful drug interactions with other medications.  Due to this, the medication should not be a first treatment choice for fungal infection.  If combined with the wrong drug, a patient taking Nizoral oral tablets may experience serious and potentially life-threatening outcomes, such as heart rhythm problems.
