Goodyear Tire Recall

  • Home

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is recalling 41,000 tires used on vans, SUVs and pickup trucks after a rollover accident that killed two people last August. The Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires were produced in 2009. The problem is that a small number of the tires could tear that may lead to crashes or car damage.

Last August, Matthew Smith, 21, and 18-year-old Kerrybeth Hall, died in a car crash when their Ford F-150 truck went into a side-skid and overturned. Crash investigators determined that the tire tread came apart on the front right tire of the vehicle.

The recall covers 40,915 tires produced in six sizes from March to May 2009. In a letter to federal safety regulators, Goodyear said that it first saw an increase in warranty and property damage claims during a review in May 2010. In a letter last week to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Goodyear said “a small number of tires within this population may experience a partial tread area separation under certain severe usage conditions.”

About 27,000 of the tires are believed to still be in service. Goodyear plans to send notices to customers about the recall by March 22. The tires affected by the recall have the following serial codes (tire identification numbers) on the sidewall:

  • PJ0UY5HV0909 through PJ0UY5HV2209
  • PJAB35HV0909 through PJAB35HV2209
  • PJ4335HV0909 through PJ4335HV2209
  • PJ1535HV0909 through PJ1535HV2209
  • PJAH35HV0909 through PJAH35HV2209
  • PJLHL6HV0909 through PJLHL6HV2209
