Infant Tylenol Recall

  • Home

Recall-prone J&J’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit is recalling all 574,000 bottles of grape-flavored, Liquid Infants’ Tylenol from stores nationwide. McNeil has been plagued by recalls as of late. Johnson and Johnson, McNeil’s parent, recently redesigned infant Tylenol saying the new design would be safer and make dosage easier to follow. Friday Johnson and Johnson announced that all infant Tylenol is being pulled from U.S. shelves because some parents have had problems with the redesigned bottles.

The new Liquid Infant Tylenol comes with a syringe. This plastic syringe has an opening in the tip but no needle – it’s meant to squirt medicine into the baby’s mouth. There is a a protective cover (flow restrictor) at the top of the bottle to help measure the right dose. McNeil says that restrictor has been pushed into the bottle in some cases when the syringe is inserted.

This particular version of Tylenol Infant Formula has only been on the market three months. It was re-packaged and re-formulated for safety. Tylenol (acetaminophen) poisoning is a dangerous issue. Liver failure is a possible result of acetaminophen overdose. Please see Longo Legal blog “Tylenol Infant Formula Confusion” dated February 14, 2012.

The new Infant Formula Tylenol also has a different concentration. The caregiver must be aware to use the correct intended dose. The new formula contains 160 mg/5ml. The older version was 80 mg/0.8ml or 80 mg/ml. The older version has a medicine dropper similar to a small turkey baster. Do not mix the applicators between the new and old version. Otherwise, you could under or over medicate you child.

If your child was poisoned by acetaminophen, call Longo Legal, PLLC, toll free at 855-566-4648. We may be able to help.
