Levaquin, Cipro, and More Required to Update Drug Labels and Medication Guides

  • Home

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert stating that all fluoroquinolone antibacterial drugs must have updated drug labels and Medication Guides.

List of Fluoroquinolone Drug Products

The information currently missing from the labels and guides is the risk of serious nerve damage potentially caused by the use of fluoroquinolones.  The list of approved fluoroquinolone drug products includes:

  • levofloxacin (Levaquin)
  • ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
  • moxifloxacin (Avelox)
  • norfloxacin (Noroxin)
  • ofloxacin (Floxin)
  • gemifloxacin (Factive)

The risk of peripheral neuropathy, a nerve disorder occuring in the arms and legs, has only shown association with fluoroquinolones that are taken orally or by injection.  The topical forms of the drug have not been associated with the risk at this time.

The FDA recommends that patients showing symptoms of peripheral neuropathy stop the use of fluoroquinolone and be switched to a different antibacterial drug, unless the benefit of continued treatment with a fluoroquinolone outweighs the risk.  This decision is to be made by a healthcare professional.

Fluoroquinolone Drug Product Side Effects

Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include:

  • pain
  • burning
  • tingling
  • numbness
  • weakness
  • change in sensation to light touch, pain or temperature

According to the FDA, more than 23 million patients received a prescription for an oral fluoroquinolone product from outpatient retail pharmacies in 2011.  In the same year, approximately 3.8 million patients were billed for an injectable fluoroquinolone product.

If you or someone you know has been injured by Levaquin, Cipro, Avelox, Noroxin, Floxin, or Factive, call Longo Legal, PLLC to find out if you have a potential claim. The first step is to get some preliminary information over the phone. The initial phone call and consultation cost you nothing. You will not pay Longo Legal, PLLC anything towards your fluoroquinolone lawsuit unless a recovery is made on your behalf. Call Longo Legal at (855) 566-4648 to see if you qualify.
