Levaquin May Cause Retinal Detachment

  • Home

Connective tissue injury, particlarly tendon ruptures, have been a known side effect of Levaquin. Now a new study in Canada links Levaquin use to patients suffering from a detached retina. The new study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Levaquin is an antibiotic used to treat an array of infections including pneumonia, bacterial bronchitis, kidney infections and others. Levaquin and other fluoroquinolone drugs have been known to cause health complications, including tendon ruptures. The FDA has issued a “black box” warning about the risks of Levaquin and tendon ruptures. Rotator cuff tears and other connective tissue injury has been suspected as a side effect of taking Levaquin for years now.

Researchers in British Columbia conducted this new study focusing on the connective tissue of the eye. About 1 million patients were studied over a seven year period. Of those, 4,400 of them suffered from a retinal detachment, and one out of every 30 of those patients was taking a fluoroquinolone at the time. In short, patients taking Levaquin or other types of flouroquinoines may be as much as five times more likely to develop the retinal detachment than patients who didn’t take flouroquinoines.

If you took Levaquin and developed a side effect including retinal detachment or tissue injury, call Longo Legal, PLLC toll free at 855-566-4648. We may be able to help.
