Methylene Chloride Deaths

  • Home

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about the common chemical methylene chloride. The CDC has found the chemical responsible for 13 deaths in 10 states. This chemical is a common ingredient in liquid strippers used to remove paint, epoxy, and grease.

The research on this chemical was done at Michigan State University. Workers and homeowners using products that contain methylene chloride died between 2000 and 2011. Generally, the products they used were to strip paint from residential bathtubs. But, products that contain this chemical can be used for a variety of applications. They can be used for automotive or home improvement. The products can come in aerosol or liquid.

The public should be aware that this chemical can cause an extreme hazard. It is used in the industrial and construction industry. Residentially, the consumer should know that personal protective equipment (PPE) and adequate ventilation is important. In a confined space, vapor from the chemical can become very concentrated.

Many of the products that contain methylene chloride can be found at your local hardware store or Home Depot. If you are going to use a stripper, please read the label. The label will tell you if the product has this chemical. Follow the directions and use the required PPE.
