WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Paxil®, also known as Aropax®, Seroxat®, or Sereupin®, is a drug prescribed by medical professionals to treat depression, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder. In late 2005, the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory stating that the use of Paxil® during pregnancy as been shown to increase the chance of birth defects. These birth injuries are sometimes life threatening.

PAXIL® AND PREGNANCY

Women sometimes take Paxil® during pregnancy to help control pregnancy-related depression or anxiety. According to the FDA, the use of Paxil® during the first trimester of pregnancy has been connected to an increased risk of a birth defect in the newborn child of the mother taking Paxil®. Studies show that women taking Paxil® and other drugs containing paroxetine, are at greater risk for major congenital malformations in their newborns when compared to women taking other antidepressants.

A study on the risks associated with the use of Paxil® revealed that the drug is associated with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), a serious and sometimes fatal lung condition. PPHN occurs in newborns soon after they are born. According to the FDA, PPHN was seen six times more often in newborns born to mothers that took Paxil® than in mothers that did not take Paxil®.

Paxil® may be associated with multiple birth defects. Contact a birth injury lawyer today if your child or someone you love has experienced one of these Paxil® related birth defects:
