WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Januvia®, Byetta® and Janumet® are prescription drugs used to help manage blood sugar in adults with Type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes affects the way the body metabolizes sugar. A person with Type-2 diabetes is either resistant to the effects of insulin or does not produce enough insulin on their own. A person taking Januvia® or Byetta® may be at risk for serious side effects such as pancreatic cancer.

In addition to pancreatic cancer, the use of Byetta® may be linked to a higher risk of thyroid cancer.

Januvia® and Pancreatitis

Januvia® may cause acute pancreatitis. In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to healthcare professionals that Januvia® has been associated with more than 80 cases of acute pancreatitis, including necrotizing and hemorrhagic pancreatitis.

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which malignant cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas. It is dangerous and sometimes life-threatening. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

  • Upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back
  • Jaundice (yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes)
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Depression
  • Blood clots

The FDA

The FDA has received numerous reports that patients using Januvia® or Byetta® have developed pancreatic cancer.  When compared to patients using other treatments, there is a 2.9-fold increase in reported cases of pancreatic cancer from those taking Byetta® and a 2.7-fold increase of reported pancreatic cancer from Januvia® users, according to a study at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The FDA warns patients and healthcare providers to watch for the symptoms listed above and to closely monitor patient health after starting or changing the dose of Januvia® or Byetta®.
