WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Risperdal® is a prescription drug used to treat schizophrenia, symptoms of bipolar disorder, and symptoms and irritability of autistic disorder. The drug works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Risperdal® may also have been prescribed for treating ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, Tourette syndrome, behavior issues, or depression.

RISPERDAL® AND GYNECOMASTIA

Risperdal® can increase levels of prolactin, which is a hormone that stimulates breast growth and milk production. Prolactin is a protein hormone that induces and maintains lactation in women after they give birth. In adolescent males, Risperdal® may cause a condition called gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of male breast tissue. High levels of prolactin in males can interfere with the ability to produce testosterone and can lead to a number of problems caused by the reduced levels of the hormone. One of the effects of prolactin in males is that it can cause breast glands to swell. Rarely, the presence of high levels of prolactin over a long period of time can cause males to produce small amounts of milk. High levels may also increase the risk of breast cancer in young boys and adolescents.

RISPERDAL® STUDIES

Multiple studies have shown a link between Risperdal® and gynecomastia.   A study in Psychopharmacology, 1999 linked Risperdal® to gynecomastia, when combined with Prozac.

A study in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, 2006 found that persistent elevation of prolactin for periods of up to two years have been found in patients being treated with risperidone.

A study in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, 2009 showed that risperidone use in adolescents “can strongly increase prolactin levels, with clinical consequences such as gynecomastia and/or galactorrhea.”

If you experienced gynecomastia as a result of the use of Risperdal®, you could be eligible for financial compensation. Contact Longo Legal today to tell us your story. You can call us at 1-855-566-4648 or send us a message through our Contact page.
