Skin Burns From Muscle and Joint Pain Relievers

  • Home

Over the counter (OTC) pain relievers are used commonly to treat muscle and joint issues. They are applied topically to the skin. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an alert that there have been reports of skin burns associated with the use of some of these products.

The products at issue that contain menthol, methyl salicylate, or capsaicin. They can be purchased without a prescription under brand names that include Bengay, Capzasin, Flexall, Icy Hot, and Mentholatum. The alert covers the various ways the products are marketed whether in creams, lotions, ointments, or patches.

The FDA reports that rare cases of serious skin injuries have occurred in some consumers. When applied correctly, these products should not cause pain or skin damage, the alert states. But, there have been rare cases of serious burns following their use. The severity of the skin burns ranges from first to third degree. Some consumers have even had serious complications that required hospitalization.

The FDA recommends consumers to immediately stop using these products if they experience pain, swelling, or blistering of the skin, where the product if applied. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience these side effects from topical pain and joint relievers.

If you believe you or a loved one was harmed by a medical product, contact Longo Legal, PLLC for a free consultation at 855-566-4648.
