Tainted Steroid Causes Fungus Meningitis

  • Home

There have been more than 25 suspected cases of fungal meningitis reported in at lease five states. Fungal meningitis is a very serious illness. At least one of the cases resulted in death. The culprit is believed to be tainted steroid drugs. The steroids have been traced back to a large pharmacy that is responsible for mixing existing medications. The steroids in question were in injectable form.

Certain large pharmacies, sometimes known as compounding pharmacies, do not have to abide by the same rigorous safety standards set forth by the Food and Drug Administration for pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The compounding pharmacy in this case processed an injectable form of methylprednisolone acetate. Methylprednisolone acetate is a prescription steroid used to treat primarily back pain. The drug has been made unavailable by the manufacturer and is not expected to be back on the market again for at least one year.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the compounding pharmacy was aware of some problems with the production of the drug. The pharmacy issued a vouluntary recall on three batches of the methylprednisolone acetate.  However, that recall did not occur in time to prevent consumers from being exposed to fungal meningitis.

One state has suspended the operating license of the compounding pharmacy. The company has also voluntarily surrendered its license to operate in its own state. There is concern that other products from the same company may be tainted.

If you believe you or a loved on has been harmed by a prescription drug, call Longo Legal, PLLC toll free at 855-566-4648. We may be able to help.
