The Dangers of Tylenol®

  • Home

Acetaminophen has historically been one of the safest medications. But, be cautious, ingesting acetaminophen is not without its dangers. The consequences from acetaminophen poisoning can be grave. Severe liver injury from acetaminophen overdosing can lead to liver failure, liver transplant, and death.

Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol®. The problem is that acetaminophen is also found in many other medications in both over-the-counter and prescription form. Taking Tylenol® together with these other medications could poison you unintentionally. Some medications that contain acetaminophen are: Actifed, Alka-Seltzer Plus, Benadryl, Butalbital, Co-Gesic, Contac, Excedrin, Fioricet, Lortab, Midrin, Norco, Percocet, Robitussin, Sedapap, Sinutab, Sudafed, TheraFlu, Vick’s Nyquil, Vick’s DayQuil, Vicodin, Wygesic, and Zydone.

Further complicating the danger, your liver may already be damaged due to infection. Drinking alcohol or other illness may also make you more susceptible to damage from acetaminophen overdose. Those who already have with liver illnesses or people who chronically consume large amounts of alcohol should be particularly careful. When you are feeling your worst, your judgment may also be compromised as to the amount of acetaminophen you took over a period of time.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently responded to the reports of liver failure from acetaminophen poisoning. The FDA recently released guidelines asking manufacturers of prescription combination products that contain acetaminophen to limit the amount of acetaminophen per capsule to no more than 325 milligrams (mg). Because of continued reports of liver injury, FDA proposes that warnings be added to all acetaminophen prescription products about potential liver injury.
