More Evidence Associated with Yaz® Birth Control Side Effects

  • Home

Multiple studies have found that some Yaz® and Yasmin® birth control users experience side effects that increase the risk of a pulmonary embolism or other blood clot injuries more often than users of other birth control pills.

The latest study, published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal this week found that drospirenone-based birth control pills such as Yaz® increase the risk of venous thromboembolism by as much as 65 percent. This study is one of at least three to confirm the association between Yaz® birth control and the risk of blood clots.

Studies conducted by the FDA and others have all reached the conclusion that Yaz® and Yasmin® (both belonging to Bayer) appear to be more dangerous than older birth control pills. The FDA recently released a drug safety report stating that Yaz® and Yasmin® birth control are associated with side effects that increase the risk of blood clot by up to 75% compared to older contraceptives.

A study recently published in the British Medical Journal found that users of Yaz® and Yasmin®, among other new birth control pills, could face twice the risk of developing blood clots compared to women taking levonorgestrel birth control pills.

The FDA advisory committee will examine the data on the risk of blood clots from Yaz® and Yasmin® in a meeting next month.

The findings of these studies appear to support the hundreds of claims from women involved in Yaz® lawsuits and Yasmin® lawsuits. The women filing these lawsuits experienced serious and sometimes fatal blood clots after the use of Yaz® and Yasmin®. The complaints associated with Yaz® and Yasmin® claim that Bayer did not adequately warn women about the risk of developing blood clots. The complaints also allege that Bayer minimized the risk of side effects in order to increase profits.
