WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Zofran (ondansetron) is a powerful anti-nausea medication marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. It was approved in 1991 to treat nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy.

Although it is not approved for use by pregnant women, Zofran is sometimes prescribed off-label to treat morning sickness during pregnancy, including a severe form called hyperemesis gravidarum. It may be prescribed as a tablet, liquid or as an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT).

ZOFRAN® AND PREGNANCY

Zofran (ondansetron), the popular anti-nausea medication sometimes used during pregnancy has recently been linked to an increased risk of birth defects, according to new research.

The drug’s warning label does not indicate a risk of birth defect on its warning label, despite it being prescribed to treat morning sickness in some pregnancies. The manufacturer of Zofran is currently under fire, being accused of illegally marketing Zofran for morning sickness by failing to warn consumers and the medical community about the risks of Zofran use during pregnancy.

Recently a number of studies have raised concern that taking Zofran while pregnant increases the risk of birth defects, especially when used during the first trimester. Unfortunately, this is often when morning sickness during pregnancy is at its worst, which means women are more likely to be prescribed Zofran during this risky time period.

Due to the Zofran pregnancy category B, Zofran is often prescribed to treat morning sickness despite the fact that the safety of taking Zofran while pregnant has not been well studied.

ZOFRAN® AND BIRTH DEFECTS

Potential Zofran birth defects found in recent studies include:

  • Cleft lip and cleft palate (2.4-fold increased risk)
  • Heart defects (doubled risk)
  • Kidney defects
  • Musculoskeletal defects
  • Poor fetal growth
  • Fetal death
