Zoloft® Birth Defects

  • Home

Zoloft® is an antidepressant drug that could have serious consequences if taken during pregnancy because of the health risks it may pose to unborn babies. A study has shown an increased risk in certain birth defects of a fetus when SSRIs (like Zoloft®)are taken in the first trimester of pregnancy including major congenital anomalies. Many are heart related problems.

Another study, published online by the British Medical Journal, revealed that women who take SSRIs during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to children with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN). PPHN is also known as high blood pressure in the lungs. Babies born to the women in the study were analyzed after 33 weeks of pregnancy. The results found that taking SSRIs seemed to clearly raise the risk of pulmonary persistent hypertension.

Some of the birth defects with may be associated with SSRI prescription medication are:

  • Anal Atresia
  • Cleft Lip
  • Club Foot
  • Congenital Heart Defect (CHD)
  • Cranial Birth Defects
  • Gastrointestinal Malformations
  • Heart Malformations & PPHN)
  • Limb Reduction Defects
  • Omphalocele
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Personally, I have found the there are many mothers who have children with birth defects who have taken an SSRI (particularly Zoloft®) that have yet to seek advice of a professional. If you took a drug during pregnancy and you child was born with a birth defect, call us today.
